Have air purifiers or sterilizers a mandatory certification?

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the demand for air purifiers or sterilizers increased to make residential and business environments safer.

NCC highlights for you the most common products and where to find the certification stamps.

  • Air purifiers with filters: These shall undoubtedly be certified by Ordinance No. 371, of December 29, 2009.
  • Air sterilizers with UV (Ultraviolet) technology: As the sterilizers work under light-controlled conditions and do not have filtering systems, the particular standards do not cover this type of technology, and it has mandatory certification under Ordinance No. 371:2009. We emphasize that if the product has UV technology but performs ventilation or additionally has filters, the equipment certification automatically becomes mandatory.
  • Air sterilizers with ozone: As sterilizers work by generating ozone through different technologies and do not have filtering systems, the particular standards do not cover this type of technology, nor is their certification mandatory under Ordinance No. 371:2009. We emphasize that if the product, in addition to ozone generation, also performs ventilation or has filters, the equipment certification automatically becomes mandatory.
  • Air exhaust with any technology applied for air purification shall also undoubtedly be certified by Ordinance No. 371:2009. Just the fact that there is an exhaust function makes the product fit the applicable standards.

We highlight here that Ordinance No. 371:2009 covers only products applicable to residential and commercial environments.

Products intended for industrial installation do not fall within NCC’s scope.

In this case, we suggest asking Inmetro directly, through the ombudsman, to verify whether certification is mandatory.
