Wi-Fi in Brazil

Wi-Fi technology is a reality everywhere, and Brazil is no different. Can you imagine what your life would be like without Wi-Fi?

Nowadays, being connected is a necessity. Wi-Fi communication spread even further with the presence of Smartphones, which boosted the search for high-capacity routers to share technology in the home and corporate network.

We find the operation of Wi-Fi through the IEEE 802.11 standard, which throughout history has evolved to meet the growing demand. We operate in 802.11 b/g/n/a/ac/ax, and to facilitate the understanding of the variations and their nomenclatures, we can consider the most recent versions, as shown in the table below:

Designation  IEEE Standard

Wi-Fi 4 802.11 n

Wi-Fi 5 802.11 ac

Wi-Fi 6 802.11 ax

The figures below can be found on the devices to facilitate the identification of the Wi-Fi operating capacity present on the equipment.

Designação Padrão IEEE
Wi-Fi 4 802.11 n
Wi-Fi 5 802.11 ac
Wi-Fi 6 802.11 ax

Today, with the massive use of devices connected to a network and the progress in offering streaming services, it is increasingly necessary to gain access to the Internet quickly, with the lowest latency and capable of serving the most significant number of users. The sixth generation of Wi-Fi proposes to meet these demands.

Do you know the Wi-Fi 6? The new generation of technology that is more present in the user’s life.

Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax) is the sixth generation of wireless network technology that presents significant gains in performance. The new generation brought several relevant factors with interesting differences for version 5. We highlight, below, some expressive characteristics based on literature and data from manufacturers

Speed

Range of up to 9.6 Gigabits/s, i.e., a 30% improvement compared to version 5.

Latency

Through OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access), it is possible to obtain greater efficiency in delivering information. The figure below illustrates the concept.

  • More devices connected simultaneously

In Wi-Fi 6, we can find products with up to 8 antennas and through MU-MIMO technology (Multi-User, Multiple Input, Multiple Output) to serve up to 8 different users/devices. In the Mu-MIMO 8×8 option, we have the functionality with uploads and downloads, while in version 5, only Download.

    Safety

Wi-Fi 6 is also safer. With all the features mentioned above, the router shall support WPA3 encryption.

    Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 6E is version 6 of the technology operating in the 6GHz band. It has all the benefits of Wi-Fi 6 with a significant improvement in the range of available channels, avoiding congestion issues. Enjoying high-resolution streaming and virtual reality applications will be favored using Wi-Fi version 6E. Recently, Anatel published ACT No. 1306/2021, which establishes the normative requirements for the homologation of devices that operate in the 6GHz band with Wi-Fi 6E technology, which puts Brazil in evidence worldwide along with the USA, South Korea, and Chile, which adopted similar measures.

    Compatibility

All Wi-Fi generations are compatible with each other. With this, it would be possible to connect a Wi-Fi 4 device with a Wi-Fi 6 router and vice versa. The downside is that to exploit the full potential available through Wi-Fi 6E, devices (routers, smartphones, devices, etc.) shall be compatible with the technology.

In addition, the provider shall provide an excellent service, combined with quality products that, in synergy with Wi-Fi 6E technology, can guarantee the maximum effectiveness of the system.

Products homologated by Anatel ensure the operability and security of the entire network, increasing efficiency. NCC Certificações, with more than 20 years of experience in the market, plays a fundamental role in this process by promoting the certification of their equipment to manufacturers and suppliers in the market following current regulations at ANATEL.

    WHAT ABOUT THE FUTURE?

There are already study groups working on Wi-Fi 7, consolidating the next generation of technology that will bring even more significant improvements in available channels and the number of simultaneous users, which will get better performance.
